Engineering Capabilities
Our railway service covers the full range of rail infrastructure engineering, project management, and technical audit requirements.
Specialist rail engineering, PMC, and Independent Checking Consultancy across Malaysia’s largest rail programmes.
Railway engineering is among the most specialist and demanding disciplines within civil infrastructure. Rail projects require the seamless integration of civil, structural, geotechnical, mechanical, electrical, signalling, and communications engineering — all delivered to precise geometric, dynamic, and operational tolerances that leave little room for compromise. Emenea Engineering Services has established itself as one of the leading Malaysian consultancies for railway engineering, PMC, and Independent Checking Consultant appointments, with our capability grounded in continuing engagement on the country’s largest rail programmes.
Our railway experience is anchored by our role as a founding consortium member of KSET (Konsortium Kinta Samudra – Emenea – TechArt), which served as Project Management Consultant on the RM12.485 billion Ipoh–Padang Besar Electrified Double Track Project — the largest single Malaysian Government infrastructure development of its year and a programme completed ahead of schedule to award-winning standards. This capability continues through our ongoing engagements including the Subang Jaya–Skypark Electrified Double Track Project as Independent Checking Consultant.
Our railway service is supported by a specialist team whose members have accumulated 38 to 44 years of first-hand experience across track alignment, permanent way, signalling and communications, and every major aspect of Malaysian rail infrastructure. This depth allows Emenea to deploy specialist expertise directly onto the projects that need it, without the delays and interface risks of subcontracted specialist input.
Our railway service covers the full range of rail infrastructure engineering, project management, and technical audit requirements.
Design and audit of horizontal and vertical track alignment for high-speed, conventional, and freight rail, addressing geometric standards, cant and curvature requirements, sighting distances, and interfaces with structures and stations. Our alignment specialist Hj. Selamat B. Hj. Tahir brings 44 years of experience including his tenure as Senior Manager at KTMB for special projects.
Design and technical audit of permanent way infrastructure including ballast, sleepers, rail, fastenings, turnouts, and specialist track systems. Our permanent way specialist Mansur Ghazali brings 44 years of experience including planning roles at KTMB and technical audit work across multiple rail programmes.
Design, integration, and technical audit of railway signalling systems, train control systems, communications infrastructure, and Centralised Traffic Control (CTC). Our signalling specialist Ir. Adenan Bin Rashid brings 38 years of experience including 14 years at KTMB and specialist signalling engineering on the Ipoh–Padang Besar project.
Design and project management of railway electrification systems including Overhead Catenary Systems (OCS), sub-stations, feeder stations, Mid-Point Train Sectioning Locations (MPTSL), and integration with track and structural elements.
Design and Independent Checking Consultancy for railway bridges, viaducts, tunnels, retaining walls, and cut/embankment structures. Our railway structures portfolio includes contributions to the 2.97 km Berapit Tunnel (the longest railway tunnel in Southeast Asia), the 3.45 km Bukit Merah Marine Viaduct, the 28.97 km Simpang Ampat–Bukit Merah Land Viaduct, and the 282-metre Prai River Swing Bridge.
Design and project management of major stations, minor stations, halts, and station facilities. Our station portfolio includes work on 23 stations across the Ipoh–Padang Besar alignment. Our tunnel capability was demonstrated on both the 2.97 km Berapit Twin Tunnel (mined tunnel, cut and cover, and pipe arch solutions under PLUS Highway) and the 0.33 km Larut Tunnel (drill and blast).
Design and Independent Checking Consultancy of railway viaducts including specialist marine and land viaducts, and railway bridges of all scales.
Design and project management of train maintenance depots and associated facilities. The Ipoh–Padang Besar project included three train maintenance depots.
Through Emenea PMC Sdn Bhd, the firm provides full-lifecycle Project Management Consultancy (PMC) and Independent Checker services for rail infrastructure. Their expertise covers integrated planning, contract administration, design audits, and construction monitoring for major assignments like the Subang Jaya–Skypark railway.
Our railway engineering practice is grounded in the following principles.
Railway projects demand seamless coordination across civil, structural, geotechnical, systems, signalling, and communications disciplines. Emenea’s integrated multi-disciplinary structure is particularly well-suited to this challenge, delivering internally coordinated railway engineering solutions.
Our railway designs and technical audits conform to Malaysian rail standards, Suruhanjaya Pengangkutan Awam Darat (APAD) requirements, and internationally recognised rail engineering standards including UIC, EN, and BS EN codes as applicable.
Rail infrastructure demands precise geometric and dynamic tolerances. Our design and audit processes incorporate rigorous tolerance management from concept through construction.
Beyond the civil and structural elements, successful rail delivery depends on the effective integration of electrification, signalling, communications, and rolling stock interfaces. Our team includes specialists across these areas.
Rail upgrading and rehabilitation works must often be delivered adjacent to operational rail infrastructure. Our designs consider staging, possession windows, and safety of the travelling public and railway workforce.
As Independent Checking Consultant, we bring impartial technical rigour to design audit and construction monitoring — a distinct capability that complements our design work.
The largest single Malaysian Government infrastructure development of 2008, with a construction value of RM12.485 billion and total programme value of RM16 billion. Emenea PMC Sdn Bhd, as a founding consortium member of KSET, served as Project Management Consultant for the Ministry of Transport Malaysia. Scope: 329 km double track (739 km single track including yard areas) across four states — Perak, Penang, Kedah, and Perlis. The project was completed ahead of schedule in December 2013 and received the CIDB Malaysian Construction Industry Excellence Award 2015 (Best Project Award – Infrastructure Project Major).
Key Elements Delivered:
Independent Checking Consultant appointment by the Ministry of Transport Malaysia for the first-phase electrified double track project from Subang Jaya to the Skypark Terminal. RM500 million project comprising upgrading works to the existing track alignment adjacent to Subang Jaya commuter station and new track alignment on viaducts. Services commenced in April 2013 through contractual completion in mid-2016.
Twin railway tunnels totalling 2.97 km through Bukit Berapit in Perak, delivered using mined tunnel, cut-and-cover, and pipe-arch solutions (the pipe-arch section constructed under the operational PLUS Highway). Breakthrough achieved on 1 November 2010.
