Foundation Design

Design of piled foundations, raft foundations, pad foundations, and specialist foundation systems for buildings, bridges, viaducts, marine structures, and utility infrastructure. Our foundation design capability addresses the full range of loading conditions and ground types encountered across Malaysia.

Ground Improvement and Stabilisation

Design and specification of ground improvement measures including dynamic compaction, preloading, prefabricated vertical drains, stone columns, and specialist chemical stabilisation. Applied to reclaimed land, soft ground foundations, and areas requiring settlement control.

Slope Stabilisation and Rehabilitation

Design of slope stabilisation solutions for highway and infrastructure applications, including active protection systems for cut slopes, embankment stabilisation, and rehabilitation of failed slopes. Our slope portfolio includes major highway slope works for Petronas along the Kuala Lumpur–Karak Highway.

Embankment and Cut Slope Design

Design of highway embankments through varied terrain including areas of soft ground, dense jungle, and complex topography. Our embankment design experience includes the high earth embankments of the Second East-West Highway through primary rainforest.

Underpinning and Remedial Works

Design of underpinning solutions for structures affected by settlement, ground movement, or increased loading requirements. Includes specialist remedial works for existing infrastructure assets.

Geotechnical Design Audit

Independent Checking Consultant and design audit services for the geotechnical elements of major infrastructure projects. Emenea served as design audit specialist for the geotechnical works of the RM12.485 billion Ipoh–Padang Besar Electrified Double Track Project.

 

Technical Approach to Ground Engineering

Our geotechnical practice is grounded in the following principles.

Geotechnical solutions must respond to the specific ground conditions at each site. Our designs begin with thorough interpretation of site investigation data and, where appropriate, additional targeted investigation to resolve uncertainties.

Ground engineering inherently involves uncertainty — soil properties vary, groundwater conditions change, and ground behaviour is not always fully predictable. Our designs incorporate appropriate safety margins that reflect the confidence level of available data.

Foundation and retention design cannot be developed in isolation from the structures they support. Our geotechnical team works in continuous coordination with our structural and civil engineers to develop integrated substructure solutions.

Geotechnical designs are developed with full consideration of construction methodology, contractor capability, equipment access, and site constraints. Buildable ground engineering solutions deliver on time and on budget.

Ground engineering works, particularly slope stabilisation and earthworks, can have significant environmental impact. Our designs address erosion control, drainage management, and the protection of surrounding ecosystems.

Geotechnical solutions must perform reliably across the intended service life of the supported infrastructure. Our designs consider long-term drainage performance, potential ground movement, and inspection accessibility for future monitoring.

Ipoh–Padang Besar Electrified Double Track — Geotechnical Design Audit

Design audit specialist role for the geotechnical works of the RM12.485 billion Electrified Double Track Project from Ipoh to Padang Besar. Ir. Menachi Sundaram Chettiar led the geotechnical design audit across foundation systems, embankment works, and slope engineering for the 329 km rail alignment.

Kuala Lumpur–Karak Highway Slope Stabilisation

Civil and structural design for the construction of slope stabilisation on the Kuala Lumpur–Karak Highway for Petronas. Soil nailing and anchoring methods were applied to prevent soil erosion and landslides toward the adjacent Petronas petrol pump station and cafeteria buildings. Contract value: RM16 million (2002).

TNB Grid Maintenance Rectification Programme

Civil and structural design and project management for rectification works addressing settlement, slope failure, tower foundation stabilisation, and river erosion control across the Tenaga Nasional Berhad transmission grid. Sites addressed included:

  • Substation structure stabiliser at PMU Tongkang Pecah, Johor
  • Tower foundation stabiliser at Tower T70 (PKLG-KULW) and T59 (KPAR-KULN), Puncak Alam
  • Slope failure remediation at Tower T151 (AGJH-BAHS), Kuala Pilah, Negeri Sembilan
  • River erosion control at Tower T194 (BTRK-TPAH), Sungkai, Perak

Petronas Bentong Petrol Station Slope Protection

Civil and structural design and project management for slope stabilisation protecting a single-storey building housing a petrol pump station and food court at Lat 2807, Bentong, Pahang for Petronas Dagangan Berhad. Contract value: RM16 million (2002).

Extensive experience with soft ground, reclaimed areas, and coastal alluvium in Klang Valley, Selangor, Perak, Penang, Kedah, and Perlis, including major infrastructure works along this corridor.

Design and geotechnical assessment for infrastructure works in Pahang, Terengganu, and Kelantan, including river-adjacent works and coastal infrastructure.

Geotechnical assessment work for specialist installations including the satellite earth station facility at Labuan.

Slope engineering, cut-and-fill design, and embankment stabilisation for highway projects traversing the Titiwangsa mountain range and Kelantan/Terengganu interior, including the Second East-West Highway alignment through dense forest.
